Updating Windows

Recap:

• Unpatched servers and applications are one of the primary causes of data breaches.
• Knowing the OS Version and Build Number are useful when troubleshooting issues and installing new applications.
• Knowing what updates are installed can also assist with troubleshooting issues.
• Utilizing WSUS or SCCM to manage updates helps keep machines patch-levels standardized and improves network performance.
• At a minimum, keep Critical and Security updates installed and up to date.
• To check your window information, hit the Windows key and type, winver.

Key Terms

WSUS: Windows Server Update Services is a computer program and network service developed by Microsoft Corporation that enables administrators to manage the distribution of updates and hotfixes released for Microsoft products to computers in a corporate environment.

SCCM: System Center Configuration Manager is a systems management software product developed by Microsoft for managing large groups of computers running Windows.
